It’s a little past the middle of the month now, which is about the time when beauty box subscriptions start coming in. Today I have the first of a few different subscriptions to show you for January. This is my January Sample Society box, which is a subscription service put out by Beautybar.com affiliated with Allure. Use referral code ALEA8925 to get 20% off your first purchase!

Sample Society is $15 a month for 4-5 deluxe samples. Their sample sizes are quite generous, often including a full size product in addition to true deluxe samples. The only time I have ever received a packet sample from Sample Society is when they included it as an extra, in addition to the other 4-5 samples.
In addition to your sample box, you get a code for $15 off a $50 purchase that includes an item from one of the brands in your box for that month. The codes last for a few months after you receive your box so you don’t have to use it right away. It requires that you spend $50 so it’s not a spectacular deal, but it’s a nice way to feel like you’re getting the price of your box back if you decide you like one of the items and want a full size version of it.
Sample Society’s shipping is nice and fast for those of you who can’t stand waiting, and you usually get it fairly early in the month, unlike Birchbox or Glossybox which usually don’t arrive until close to the end of the month.
Sample Society tends to focus on more skincare products than makeup so if you like creams and treatments, you’ll probably like Sample Society over Birchbox which samples all sorts of products. This month they included a few hair products, which is unusual for SS so we’ll have to see if this is a continuing trend.
So this is my box for this month. All subscribers receive the same items, which is the same as Glossybox and Ipsy, but different than Birchbox, which usually has about anywhere from 15-30 different box variations. Some people like the suspense of finding out which box they are going to receive; others like getting the same as everyone else so they don’t feel like they are getting cheated. It all depends on personal preference!
This first item is a bit out of the ordinary for Sample Society. A full size makeup item. Lord and Berry Silk Kajal Eye Pencil in #1001 Black. This is a very soft eyeliner, but one thing I like about it is that it has a very sharp point. Sometimes eyeliners like this will be so soft that it’s impossible to get a thinner line if you don’t want a thick defined line, but this one isn’t like that. Full size $15
Nicole Richie Fragrance Eau De Parfum Spray. This is described as ‘A sensual, feminine scent layered with notes of blackberry, rose and creamy golden amber.’ I can’t detect the rose very well, but it is definitely a warm and sensual scent. It is a bit sweet with the slightest hint of spiciness. Overall, I think it is a scent that will appeal to a wide range of individuals. Full size $69
StriVectin Instant Retexturizing Scrub. StriVectin is a fairly high end skincare brand so I was excited to see this in my box. It gives me a chance to try a brand that I would not have spent money on normally, which is the exact point of subscription services like this. This is described as a deep-cleansing exfoliator that smoothes skin to reveal a more flawless face. A pretty generic description, but hopefully it will do something for me. Full size $49
Snowberry Nourishing Lite Day Cream. Another skincare item, this is a daytime skin cream. A lightweight formula, it is supposed to give skin an incandescent glow. I’m actually almost out of the last skin cream sample I tried so this is nice to have. And the packaging is simply adorable with this little design on it. You probably can’t read it, but the little design says “The stars shine all day long”. Full size $44
Serge Normant Mini Meta Revive Dry Shampoo. I’m so hyped about dry shampoos these days, they’re life savers on those in-between-showers days when your hair is looking a bit limp. This one is labeled as thickening which is the last thing I need with as much hair as I’ve got, but the thickening effects tend to be fairly unnoticeable. Full size $25
This last item was an extra in my box and not listed on the info card so I don’t have much information on it. It is from Pantene so I’m assuming it’s a hair product and it says Advanced Thickening Treatment, again not something I need very much with as thick as my hair is already, but I’m sure I can find someone who would be willing to try this out.
Hope everyone is surviving the winter! We’ve had frigid cold for the past few days, even getting into the negatives with wind chill, brrr!
